Being in Snowflake, Arizona is like
stepping back in time to a quieter more beautiful America a place
where the pace is unhurried, where the atmosphere is comfortable,
where the people are genuinely neighborly, and where there's an
ongoing observance of charming small town events, traditions and
holidays.
This in many respects the way America used to
be and still is. The architecture of Snowflake is a visually
stunning array of such styles as Victorian, and Colonial. Many of
the homes and community structures date back to the late 1800's, and
grace the Historical National Register.
One of the most beautiful
features of Snowflake is what it is not. It is not a crowded,
freeway-ribboned, brown-sky, noisy, rapidly expanding metropolis.
Growth is not an industry in Snowflake, nor is it about to be. It's
a small, clean, quiet town that intends to stay that way.
What does grow in
this lush valley with its mild four seasons climate and clean air
are the gardens of many of its residents. A variety of fruits and
vegetables thrive in this ideal climate, where winter temperatures
average 50 degrees and summers average a balmy 80 degrees.
THIS IS THE LIFE IN SNOWFLAKE HEIGHTS
Snowflake Heights is
a lush green land overlooking Snowflake and a spectacular expanse of
White Mountains scenery. Here the soil is rich for growing food and
flowers the way nature intended. And where you can enjoy the
tranquility of small town living but still have full municipal
services and the nearness of shopping, medical and recreational
facilities.
In the town of
Taylor, about a mile south, there's a 4200' runway with charter air
service available.
Snowflake, along
with the Town of Taylor, is located in east central Arizona on State
Route 77. It lies in a broad flat valley drained by the Cottonwood
and Silver Creeks at an elevation of 5,600 feet. The Mogollon Rim
and the White Mountains, south and west of Snowflake, form an almost
continuous barrier protecting the community from severe winters and
creating a semi-arid climate. Snowflake was founded in 1878 and
named after its founders William Flake and Apostle Erastus Snow. The
Town, established in 1881, incorporated in 1948.
The nearby
White Mountains, the Sitgreaves National Forest and a mild four
season climate brings the year 'round enjoyment of a wide choice of
easy to reach recreational pleasures from golf to lake fishing and
boating, to skiing, hiking and camping. Then, too you won't want to
miss such delightful annual Snowflake events as the July 4th Rodeo,
the Sweet Corn Parade and the Pioneer Days celebration. Something
you won't have here, however, are the maddening summer and weekend
crowds that converge from the Metro Phoenix area on some other high
country communities, such as Payson and Pinetop-Lakeside.
